Session Log, Taranaki 26 april 2015

Location – Taranaki
Forecast – NE 20 to 30 knots increasing to 40, Swell 1 meter building to 4 meters

ANZAC Weekend. Leading in to this weekend Sydney, Australia copped a massive storm that caused major flooding and incredible surf down the east coast of Australia. As the week progressed the chat around the kiting and surfing community was of excitement. with strong North east winds 30 to 40 knots gust 50 to 60 and swell building to 4 meters over a period of 3 days before the massive weather front and rain would turn up as the system moved across from Aus. I chose to head to Taranaki to catch up with family but of course took the toys. We arrived on the sat 25th and checked out Waitara as wind 10 – 12 knots NE was building, swell was quite small and just ended watching some of the local surf groms killing it. Decided to leave it for the day as sunday was going to be really really good.
Quite surprising Ne is a pretty good direction or the northern and western beaches of the Naki, the further south you go the wind tends to get stronger as the wind peals around Mount Taranaki.
In morning we got hold of some of the local guys who were keen on heading to Oakura about 10km south of the city, in the end they chose to stay at Fitzroy in the city. They mentioned that both wind and swell would be bigger at Oakura so off we went. Wind solid 20 to 30 knots cross onshore 3 to 4 foot swell so pumped up 9 meter 2015 re0 Perfect and with only 2 other kite surfers out was so much room to pick the waves you want. After about 20 min wind picked up even more and had to switch to 7meter as the wind picked up so did the swell.  Walked away with a massive  smile. Next stop Raglan on trip back to Auckland. #RIPDNZ  #RIPDTaranaki
